In August 1971, Judy Swann sent the president of the local chapter of Church Women United this letter. Ms. Swann, a Charter Member of the merged Unitarian and Universalist churches, was the Coordinator and Treasurer of the Unitarian Universalist Church of Urbana’s Women’s Alliance from 1968-69, as well as fulfilling many other service roles in the church.
“Until such a time comes that Church Women United relinquishes the following requirement, ‘The membership is open to all women who are members of churches which confess Jesus Christ as divine Lord and Savior in order to more fully manifest the oneness in Him’, the women of the Unitarian Universalist Church of Urbana wishes to have its name removed from your list. It has been explained to us that because we do not believe in the divinity of Jesus we cannot have any vote in the organization although we can be cooperating members. However we feel our membership on such a basis is not consistent with our beliefs.”
